The X era is a fan-made term referring to media set in the fictional setting of Mega Man X, first released in 1993 for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. It is the second era of the universe's original timeline, being a sequel to the Classic era, set mostly in the year 21XX during the battles of the Maverick Wars waged between good Reploids such as X and Zero and evil ones known as Mavericks, led by Sigma.

In official Capcom material, this series is referred to as simply Mega Man X.[1]

Timeline

Prologue

Sometime in 21XX (the 22nd century), Dr. Cain discovers the secret final creation of Dr. Light: an advanced robot called X. Using X's technology, Cain creates the Reploids, a type of robot that is capable of free will and growth like a human.

However, sometimes Reploids develop glitches and act dangerously, some even choosing to harm humans; these Reploids become known as Mavericks. Thus Dr. Cain founds the Maverick Hunters, an organization that helps neutralize these threats under the command of the most powerful Reploid yet, Sigma. X joins the Maverick Hunters, befriending a high-ranking Hunter named Zero.

Mega Man X

One day, Sigma himself suddenly goes Maverick, taking many Maverick Hunters with him into a global anti-human rebellion. X fights to defend the humans from his former commander, under the guidance of Zero. Along the way, he is tormented by the evil Vile and other former Hunters.

Although Zero perishes helping defeat Vile, X goes on to defeat Sigma himself. X flees the ruins of the base, stopping to ponder the cost of the war. However, a final message reveals that Sigma's "soul" persists.

Mega Man X2

Six months after Sigma's defeat, X and the Maverick Hunters continue to root out the remnants of the Maverick rebellion. Suddenly, a new rebellion erupts, led by a trio of Mavericks known as the X-Hunters who hold the three parts of Zero's body. X faces the X-Hunters and their army for the remains of his friend.

Although Sigma returned in a dangerous digital form known as the Sigma Virus, X vanquished both him and his X-Hunter servants, finally reuniting with the reconstructed Zero. However, X is haunted by the mystery of his friend's past, as Sigma had mysteriously claimed that Zero was destined to be a Maverick.

Mega Man Xtreme

When the powerful Mother Computer is hacked by a mysterious group called the Shadow Hunters, X enters cyberspace to fight the rampant Maverick data within and restore peace to the outside world.

Mega Man X3

Several months after the X-Hunter incident, Dr. Doppler allegedly creates a cure to stop Reploids from going Maverick. Grateful Reploids gather around him and build the utopia Dopple Town in his honor, but one day, the entire city suddenly goes Maverick in a new rebellion led by Doppler himself. X and Zero set out to stop the Doppler Army and discover the truth behind the cure.

After freeing Dr. Doppler from the influence of the Sigma Virus, X and Zero work together to destroy Sigma and administer a vaccine to defeat his viral form. Despite their victory, X now worries after seeing the instability of Dopple Town, and fears for his friendship with Zero.

Mega Man Xtreme 2

When the terrifying phenomenon of Erasure occurs en masse on Laguz Island, X and Zero travel to investigate the island, facing a mysterious duo called the Soul Erasers along the way.

Mega Man X4

A Reploid military known as Repliforce is founded to help the Maverick Hunters fight large-scale rebellions. When they come under suspicion for the Sky Lagoon incident, Colonel refuses to disarm and General declares a coup d'état to found their own independent Reploid nation. X and Zero are forced to stop the coup, this time with the help of a rookie named Double and Zero's love interest, Iris.

After Double reveals his true Maverick allegiance to X, and Iris avenges her brother by fighting Zero, they learn that Sigma was the one manipulating Repliforce to such extremes, and so defeat him. General sacrifices himself to stop the Final Weapon, ending the conflict. However, X worries that he holds the potential to go Maverick too, while Zero struggles with the truth that he was created for destruction.

Mega Man X5

Mere months into the repairs from the Great Repliforce War, Sigma suddenly returns. Though X and Zero swiftly destroy him, his explosion spreads the Sigma Virus across the globe, and his hired gun Dynamo sets the space colony Eurasia on a collision course with the Earth. X and Zero rush across the planet to repair the Enigma cannon and a Space Shuttle to stop the crisis before it's too late.

Though X and Zero are forced into their fated battle by the Zero Virus, they ultimately band together to spite Sigma's plan and defeat him. However, Zero is lost in the process, with X returning alone. He takes up Zero's Z-Saber and promises a peaceful world for his fallen friend.

Mega Man X6

Three weeks after the Earth Crisis, the world is ravaged but Maverick activity is quiet, so X begins helping rebuild the world. However, a mysterious illusion known as the Nightmare appears, along with a twisted doppelganger of Zero. When High Max and his Nightmare Investigators blame the chaos on the ghost of Zero, X heads out to find the truth behind the Nightmare.

X reunites with Zero, who miraculously recovered during his disappearance, and together they discover that Gate was the one behind the Nightmare, and he even revived Sigma. They defeat both Gate and Sigma, then resume their work in building a better world.

X Challenge

Sometime after the Nightmare Incident, nearly every previous maverick defeated by X or Zero[2][3] between Mega Man X to Mega Man X6 was resurrected likely due to Sigma[4] and started causing havoc. In this scenario, X's dons the Ultimate Armor (Legacy Version) which is described to be a weaker version of the Ultimate Armor from Mega Man X6 with more customization and prototype features[5].

In this incident, several Mavericks team up in groups of pairs to cause chaos and destruction. X single handedly defeated every Maverick ressurected and brought peace once again. Some of the battles are also described to be virtual training sessions to test X's strength[6] which is also the likely explanation for the secret final battle between Ultimate Armor X and Awakened Zero[7].

Mega Man X7

While the world heals from past catastrophes, X suddenly retires from the front lines of the Maverick Hunters, leaving Zero to fight rising crime rates alone. The power vaccuum is quickly filled by Red Alert, a rival vigilante syndicate led by Red. But when their mysterious young member Axl quits in hopes of joining the Maverick Hunters, Red declares war on them to get Axl back.

X comes out of retirement to help Zero and Axl stop Red Alert, defeating Red in the process. Sigma is revealed to be the one behind the gang's turn to evil, and so they defeat him. In the aftermath, Axl continues to work hard, hoping to one day be an official Maverick Hunter.

Mega Man X8

The humans seek asylum from the chaos of the Maverick Wars, planning to use an orbital elevator called Jakob to migrate to the Moon. The new generation Reploids are developed to aid in this project, but X is disturbed that their powerful Copy Chips contain the data of Sigma for some reason. His fears seem to be confirmed when the new generation Reploids kidnap the director Lumine and start a rebellion.

However, even with Sigma defeated, it is revealed that Lumine and the new generation Reploids started the rebellion of their own accord, and not due to his influence. The Hunters defeat Lumine too, but he strikes Axl with a mysterious attack, leaving him unconscious. X and Zero return to Earth with Axl, promising to continue fighting for peace even in such an uncertain future.

Note: From here, the story continues into the Elf Wars, which are described in the Zero era. While these events greatly impact the history of the franchise, no official material has been set during this period.
