Axl (アクセル) is a protagonist and playable character in the X series who first appeared in Mega Man X7. He is a prototype new generation Reploid who can shapeshift into other Reploids, and comes to join the Maverick Hunters as a comrade of X and Zero.
In the Games
Mega Man X7

In Mega Man X7, Axl debuts as the game's initial playable character. He is first shown in the opening cutscene, where he and Red infiltrate a meeting between Cedar and Aluce to kill them and steal their cargo. The story "Golden Days" included with the Rockman X7 Original Soundtrack reveals more details on Axl, including that he has no memory of his past and was simply discovered by Red one day and chose to join Red Alert.
However, Axl soon chooses to leave Red Alert to hunt Mavericks on his own. When Red Alert tries to stop him, he is forced to escape through the Crimson Fortress and Highway, where he runs into Zero and they defeat the Mega Scorpio chasing him. Zero then arrests Axl and brings him to Hunter Base, where he is reprimanded by X, until Red comes calling. Wanting to get Axl back and settle the rivalry with the Maverick Hunters, Red challenges them to a globe-spanning duel. Axl offers to join Zero in fighting Red Alert, eager to work as a Maverick Hunter, and they hesitantly allow him to.
As Axl and Zero fight the eight members of Red Alert, Axl opens up about his past with Red Alert, and how he left because they were forcing him to collect DNA data and began targeting innocent Reploids instead of Mavericks. Some such as Splash Warfly and Ride Boarski are eager to destroy Axl, while others such as Tornado Tonion and Wind Crowrang are more reluctant and hint at something sinister behind Red Alert.
Once all eight Red Alert bosses are defeated, Red invites the Hunters to the Crimson Palace; Axl remains conflicted, hoping he can convince Red to the light. However, upon fighting Red, he chooses to stay behind and perish in a rigged explosion, much to Axl's dismay. The Hunters continue and fight Sigma, the true mastermind behind Red Alert's turn. Upon his defeat, Sigma punches Axl through a wall before facing X and Zero. However, Red suddenly appears, and Sigma is about to absorb him when he reveals himself to be Axl and shoots him out of a window. Axl is proud of landing the final blow, before leaving with Zero and X.
In Axl's ending, X still refuses to make Axl an official Maverick Hunter. When Axl hears of a Maverick outbreak, he eagerly moves to deal with it, promising to prove himself. In X's ending, X continues to refuse Axl, though it is clear that Alia and Signas are vouching for him.
Mega Man X8

In Mega Man X8, Axl has officially become a Maverick Hunter who works alongside X and Zero. He is deployed to Noah's Park to stop the Maverick, Crabs-Y, and collect data samples.
Mega Man X: Command Mission
In the alternate continuity of Mega Man X: Command Mission, Axl travels to Giga City on his own after hearing that his copy ability may have been developed there, seeking answers about his past. Some time after arriving, he encounters X and his team, and joins their party.
Mega Man X DiVE

Axl appears as an unlockable Hunter Program in the crossover mobile game Mega Man X DiVE. He is a B-rank Program and was available as part of the game's initial roster on 24 March 2020. His Active Skills are Tactical Roll, which is a reference to his Rolling ability, and Strafing Barrage, which is an original attack based on his unique aiming skills.
In Story mode, Axl appears in Gallery and joins the Player there. Axl also has one variant Hunter Program: White Day Axl.

Developer Commentary
- "The only design work I did for 'X7' was to give advice on Axl. I said, 'If we're bringing in a new character, just make sure you give him a distinct silhouette.' Over the years, I came to realize that when you draw robot characters, it's mighty easy for them to fall into similar shapes. That's why I was very careful about X and Zero's silhouettes when I was designing them. Axl ended up with protrusions on his head and a gun in his hand to make him unique." - (Keiji Inafune)[1]
- "Since Axl wasn't supposed to have come from the typical 'good guy' mold, I gave him a nice big scar on his face and went with a lot of black in his coloring to give him an overall dark feel. I wanted his hair and the details of his face to exude youth to emphasize the fact that he was born after X and Zero." - (Tatsuya Yoshikawa)[1]
- "Since this is a new playable character, I was very careful about him, but from a relatively early stage I already had an image of a black body and a clean silhouette due to the key features such as using a gun, being from a vigilante group, and being a thug. I designed the large core and red lines on his body based on his ability to absorb the enemy's powers." - (Concept Art Room)[2]
