Burn Dinorex (バーン・ディノレックス), also known as Mattrex, is a Maverick from the X era, appearing as one of the main bosses in Mega Man X5. He is a fire-themed Reploid based on a Tyrannosaurus rex, who attacks with his spines and plumes of fire. He is a Repliforce agent turned weapons manufacturer who possesses the Booster Engine required for the Space Shuttle project.

Mega Man X5

Sprite from Mega Man X5.

Burn Dinorex debuted in Mega Man X5 as one of the eight Mavericks on the Stage Select screen. He holds the Booster Engine for the Space Shuttle project, serving as the boss of Magma Stage. The game's Japanese manual states he is a former member of Repliforce's disaster prevention team who now uses their technology and magma energy to illegally manufacture weapons.[2]

Burn Dinorex attacks are deceptively fast for his large size, and he can quickly cover the screen in fire attacks. Defeating Burn Dinorex grants Ground Fire to X and Quake Blazer to Zero. His weakness is the Wing Spiral or W-Shredder from Spiral Pegasus, which briefly stuns him in a tornado. A boss attack rematch with Burn Dinorex later occurs in Zero Space Stage 4: Birth.

Behind the Scenes

Developer Commentary

"Our third shot in the fantasy series. (grin) Our first, by the way, was X4's Dragoon. I think the fantasy series will be discontinued after this. (bitter laugh) There wasn't enough space for this character, and the designer in charge had a hard time creating him. To compensate, we gave him a comparative abundance of attack patterns. Sorry about that." - (Developer Comments)[4]
"When I got the idea to have flames blowing out of his back, I felt the illustration seemed a lot cooler. I'm happy they gave him such a great name." - (SEITO, Designer Comments)[4]
"Whale, Pegasus, and Dinorex were designed by Higurashi. They are simple yet refined, without a lot of unnecessary parts. Maybe it's just because I've been working on robots for so long, but my designs always seem to end up more cumbersome (laugh)." - (Haruki Suetsugu)[1]

Nomenclature

Language Name Origin
Japanese Burn Dinorex (バーン・ディノレックス) "Dinorex" is a combination of "dinosaur" and "rex", from the Tyrannosaurus rex.
English Burn Dinorex / Mattrex "Mattrex", his name in the initial English release of Mega Man X5, was inspired by Matt Sorum, a former drummer of the rock band Guns N' Roses. In the game's Mega Man X Legacy Collection 2 re-release, his name was changed to "Burn Dinorex" to match his original Japanese name.
