Blast Hornet, known as Explose Horneck (エクスプローズ・ホーネック) in Japan, is a Maverick from the X era, appearing as one of the main bosses in Mega Man X3. He is a bomb-themed Reploid based on a hornet, who harasses targets from above with bee-shaped bomb drones. He was formerly a Maverick Hunter before he was infected by the Sigma Virus in Dopple Town.
In the Games
Mega Man X3
Blast Hornet debuted in Mega Man X3 as one of the eight Mavericks on the Stage Select screen. He serves as the boss of Weapons Factory Stage. The Japanese manual states that he was formerly a Maverick Hunter in the Special 0 Unit and one of Zero's closest colleagues, until he suddenly went Maverick upon visiting Dopple Town.[2]
Blast Hornet flies in a set path while attacking relentlessly from the air, which can be troublesome without learning his pattern. Defeating Blast Hornet grants X the Parasitic Bomb. His weakness is the Gravity Well, from Gravity Beetle, which pulls him down to the floor. A boss attack rematch with Blast Hornet later occurs in Doppler Stage C.
Mega Man Xtreme 2
In Mega Man Xtreme 2, Blast Hornet returns as a resurrected Maverick guardian of Laguz Island. He is one of the four bosses in Zero Mission, being the boss of Aerial Battleship Stage. He has new Special Weapons for X and Zero: Bomb Bee and Earth Gaizer, respectively. He is weak to Sonic Slicer and Dash. Blast Hornet is later part of the boss attack in the Sigma Stage in Extreme Mode.

Rockman X3 (PS) manual | Formerly vice-captain of the Special 0 Unit and Zero's assistant, but now one of the many victims of the sudden Maverick outbreak. Although his attack power is not high, his experience as a Maverick Hunter and aerial attacks using mini bee bombs more than make up for it.[JP]

Compendium of Rockman X (X3) | Vice-captain of the Special 0 Unit. His commander, Zero, was invited to Dopple Town by Dr. Doppler. Since Zero was busy, he went in his place, but he was turned into a Maverick.[JP]
Compendium of Rockman X (XT2) | Vice-captain of the Special 0 Unit, and former assistant to Zero. Normally calm and cautious, he went Maverick after being infected with the Sigma Virus. Appeared in Mega Man X3.[JP]
Mega Man X Legacy Collection | Second-in-command of the Special 0 Unit. When Dr. Doppler sent a message inviting Zero to Dopple Town, Zero was too busy and sent Hornet in his stead. Little did he know that his friend would soon become a Maverick. Hornet is armed with compact bee bombs which he will unleash in punishing swarms until the enemy is obliterated. He is not the most powerful of Reploids, so he uses agility and good planning to his advantage, flitting through the air with his lightweight body when danger draws near. |
Behind the Scenes
Developer Commentary
- "I think I designed Hornet..." - (Hayato Kaji)[1]
- "The first thing I worked on after joining Capcom was 'X3'. They let me do illustrations of the minor enemy characters as well as three of the boss characters. Hornet was the first one that I did, but I got stuck early on when I couldn't decide on what kind of pose to draw him in. At the time, I had to get approval from Kaji, Inafune, and one of the other guys in the design studio. Without all three approvals, I couldn't go ahead with any design. I recall struggling through several weeks of trying to get my stuff approved." - (Shinsuke Komaki)[1]
