Tornado Tonion, known as Tornado Debonion (トルネード・デボニオン)[2] in Japan, is a Maverick from the X era, appearing as one of the main bosses in Mega Man X7. He is an electricity-themed Reploid based on an onion, who fights by spinning and dancing with tornadoes. He is a member of the vigilante syndicate Red Alert.
In the Games
Mega Man X7
Tornado Tonion debuted in Mega Man X7 as one of the eight Mavericks on the Stage Select screen. He serves as the boss of the Radio Tower stage. He is a member of Red Alert who loves to dance, and occupies a radio transmission tower as part of the conflict.
Tornado Tonion attacks the player by spinning towards them in a tornado, and attacking with his onion scales. Defeating Tonion grants Volt Tornado to Axl and X, and Raijinshou to Zero. His weakness is the Gaea Shield or Gokumonken from Soldier Stonekong, which sends him spinning away. A boss attack rematch with Tornado Tonion later occurs in the Crimson Palace.

Behind the Scenes
Developer Commentary
- "This is a fat onion guy who becomes skinny once you peel him. Even though his arms are floating, he still looks quite like a 'Mega Man X' character, which was a relief. His nose is usually pointed, but he keeps it tucked away during the game." - (Concept Art Room)[4]
Nomenclature
Language | Name | Origin |
---|---|---|
Japanese | Tornado Debonion (トルネード・デボニオン) | "Debonion" is likely a portmanteau of onion and the Japanese "debu" (デブ) meaning fat. |
English | Tornado Tonion | "Tonion" is a portmanteau of onion and ton, referring to his weight. It was also possibly done in order to make his name an alliteration. |
