Mega Man Zero, known as Rockman Zero (ロックマンゼロ) in Japan, is an action-platformer game that is the first entry in the Zero era. Set centuries after the end of the X era, the game stars the ancient Reploid hero Zero. He is awoken by a young human scientist named Ciel, who leads a Resistance movement in their fight against the oppressive regime of Neo Arcadia.
The game was first released on the Game Boy Advance in Japan in April 2002, and was released internationally later that year. It has since been re-released as part of the Mega Man Zero Collection on the Nintendo DS in 2010, as well as the Mega Man Zero/ZX Legacy Collection on multiple other systems in 2020.
Story
The Maverick Wars, sparked by the Sigma Virus that drove Reploids berserk, lasted for centuries. Finally, our hero X, put an end to the ever-lasting battle. At last, people were able to begin reconstructing the world.
The city of Neo Arcadia was established as a primary base for building a world where everyone could live happily. People went at the restoration work cheerfully, with smiles back on their faces. However, this "people's paradise" soon became a disaster for Reploids. The government, fearful of the threat of Reploids going berserk, accused and arrest them for any reason - or no reason at all!
Those fortunate Reploids who could escape were forced to seek safety in a devastated city. To stay alive, they mined its limited stores of energy for their own use. Ciel, a human and former Reploid researcher, emigrated with the Reploids to the ruined city. She could not abandon them while they were falsely accused by the government. She was determined to find a way to help them.
The evil hands of the government is about to extend to the Reploid sanctuary. The Reploids will all die if something isn't done quickly. Ciel remembers the name of Zero, the legendary Reploid rumored to be sleping in suspended animation at some hidden place near Neo Arcadia. "If the legend is true... he might save us..."[1]
Characters
Name | Sprite | Description |
---|---|---|
Zero | The main playable character. Abandoned in a remote energy mine, Zero wakes up from 100 years' sleep when security guards chase Ciel into a cave. No one yet knows that Zero used to fight for world peace as a Hunter, since he has lost his memory data.[1] | |
Ciel | The leader of the exiled Reploids, Ciel lives with them in the ruins. She is an excellent scientist who was eagerly doing research on new energy before the rebellion.[1] | |
Resistance | These Reploids live with Ciel in the Resistance base.[1] | |
Four Guardians | These four mysterious Reploids may have been created in the image of a certain famous Reploid.[1] | |
Copy X | The main antagonist. He is a replica of X who rules Neo Arcadia with an iron fist, persecuting Reploids. | |
X | The original ruler of Neo Arcadia as a Cyber-elf, having left his Reploid body. |
Enemies
Minor Enemies
Zero encounters large numbers of minor foes throughout his adventure, most of which respawn whenever Zero comes back to their spawn point and can thus be destroyed an infinite number of times. Unlike other Mega Man games, the enemies found in an area are not constant, but may change depending on the current mission (and whether one is active at all). Therefore, the places in which certain enemies can be found may vary depending on the state of the game.
Most minor enemies in Mega Man Zero have a specific Cyber-elf reward associated with them, which the player receives by destroying a certain number of the enemy while on a specific mission.

Disposal Center (except Stop Giant Mechaniloid Invasion) | Gibber (15 segments, Disposal Center mission) |
Minibosses
Minibosses are strong enemies that reside in their own boss arena and block Zero's way until they are defeated. They are sparsely encountered, with only two enemy types that fit the definition (three if including Asura Basura, who is considered a boss in some sources).[2] All minibosses reward Zero with a Cyber-elf the first time they are defeated, and do not respawn or reappear outside of their original mission.
Name | Image | Description | HP | Attack | Area | Cyber-elf |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Metalook | A tall device that slowly moves towards Zero and can be pushed back by attacking it. It can either fire multiple shots or swing a mace around, which goes further with every swing. Only the boiler at the bottom can be harmed, which it exposes while firing projectiles or can be exposed by knocking its top half back with a charged attack. | 48 | 2 (contact) 1 (projectile) 4 (mace) |
Subway (Destroy Train) | Beesus (1, Destroy Train) | |
Pantheon Ace | A pair of sub-bosses that fly around in a wide circle, occasionally firing three projectiles at Zero. When one has been destroyed, the other begins to fly in a figure 8 instead. | 32 | 2 (contact) 1 (projectile) |
Neo Arcadia Shrine (mission only) | Beefive (2, Neo Arcadia Shrine) |
Bosses
Bosses are powerful enemies - including Mutos Reploids, giant Mechaniloids, the Four Guardians, and Copy X - that often mark the end of a mission, or appear at a major turning point in the middle of it. Almost every boss yields a reward, which can be a Cyber-elf or a chip, and most have a specific elemental weakness that causes them to take more damage if hit by a charged attack while Zero has said elemental chip equipped.
Unlike most Mega Man platformers, there is no clear "main" group of bosses in Mega Man Zero, although four of the Mutos Reploids, as well as the Four Guardians, are refought in Neo Arcadia Core, the final stage and mission.

Areas
The world of Mega Man Zero is one large, interconnected map, divided into distinct areas. Each of the game's missions take place in one of these locations, most of which can be accessed via the Transerver or on foot.
- Underground Laboratory
- Resistance Base
- Old Surface City
- Subway Ruins
- Desert
- Abandoned Factory
- Secret Base
- Neo Arcadia
Missions
Rather than a straightforward stage system like most Mega Man games, Mega Man Zero consists of a mostly connected world map and is divided into Missions. These Missions take place in certain areas of the map, usually warping Zero to this area when the Mission starts, and multiple may take place in the same area. The exact layout and enemies present in each area depend on the active Mission, and may also be different if the area is revisited without a Mission.
Most Missions must be accepted from Ciel, although some will start automatically when certain conditions are met or when Zero enters an area for the first time. Many Missions are optional and can be failed permanently if Zero chooses to give up or loses all of his lives, which advances the story regardless, but deprives Zero of any items and other benefits that he would have acquired by completing the Mission.

Triple Rod | Polearm used for stab attacks. Can perform pogo jumps and charge attacks at higher levels. | |
Sub Tank | Grants a reserve tank which can be filled by Life Energy pickups and used later. Earned by using specific Cyber-elves. | |
Element Chip | Changes Zero's elemental alignment, granting him new abilities. Obtained by defeating certain bosses. |
Cyber-elves
Throughout the game, Zero can find Cyber-elves in boxes or by completing certain objectives, such as defeating specific enemies or bosses. Up to three of these can be equipped via a Trans Server and used individually at any time to assist him in some way, such as restoring health or granting a temporary or permanent bonus. However, using an elf causes it to be lost permanently and gives a score penalty that can lower Zero's rank.
Elves are divided into three main categories, which roughly determine their abilities: Nurse, whose powers revolve around health and healing; Animal, who focus on physical abilities or assisting Zero directly; and Hacker, who can change aspects of a stage or the game, such as boosting Zero's rank or replacing all enemies with Metalls. Further, they can be found in three different sizes, indicated by their icon size in the game menu.
While small Cyber-elves can be equipped and used immediately after obtaining them, larger elves must be raised before they become usable, which is done by feeding them set amounts of Energy Crystals. Medium-sized elves need to be levelled up once in this way, while large elves must be levelled up twice. Larger sizes typically grant more permanent boni.
Note: Elf effects that last for the current mission will also end if Zero aborts a mission, begins a new mission (if he did not have one when he used the elf) or has to retry.
