Spiral Pegasus, also known as The Skiver, or as Spiral Pegacion (スパイラル・ペガシオン) in Japan, is a Maverick from the X era, appearing as one of the main bosses in Mega Man X5. He is a wind-themed Reploid based on a pegasus, who attacks by flying through the sky and creating hurricanes. He is a former Repliforce air force officer who possesses the Orbiter Wing required for the Space Shuttle project.
In the Games
Mega Man X5
Spiral Pegasus debuted in Mega Man X5 as one of the eight Mavericks on the Stage Select screen. He holds the Orbiter Wing for the Space Shuttle project, serving as the boss of Reploid Air Force Stage. The game's Japanese manual states he is a former officer of Repliforce who now leads the Reploid Air Force, an organization formed from his old unit.[2]
Spiral Pegasus's attacks are dangerous for their ability to push the player off the arena, which is the back of a fighter jet. Defeating Spiral Pegasus grants Wing Spiral to X and W-Shredder to Zero. His weakness is the Dark Hold from Dark Necrobat, as he can be immobilized by it for an extended period of time. A boss attack rematch with Spiral Pegasus later occurs in Zero Space Stage 4: Birth.
Other Game Appearances
- In Mega Man X Legacy Collection, Spiral Pegasus appears in X Challenge. He is fought alongside Neon Tiger in 2-2, with Dark Necrobat in 5-1, and with Blaze Heatnix in 8-1.
- In TEPPEN, Spiral Pegasus appears as a Unit Card.
Other Media
- In the Rockman X5 manhua, Spiral Pegasus reprises his role from Mega Man X5.
- In the Archie Mega Man comic, Spiral Pegasus appears in the "Worlds Unite" arc as one of the Mavericks resurrected in Sigma's army.

Air Force Prince Spiral Pegasus | |
A young pegasus Reploid who now leads the Reploid Air Force. Because of his youth, he is often more passionate than reasonable. He looked up to and admired his teacher, Colonel from Repliforce, who perished in the Great War, and still has not forgotten him. He possesses the Orbiter Wing which can be used for the Shuttle. His Wing Spiral is a powerful tornado that instantly whirls anything it touches skywards.[3][4] |

A headstrong young Repliforce officer commanding a unit of the air force. Pegasus' excessive pride has often led him to make costly mistakes. He saw Colonel as his mentor and still bears a grudge about his death. His Wing Spiral weapon blasts anything it touches into the air. |
Behind the Scenes
Developer Commentary
- "This is our second shot in the fantasy series. In the previous game, X4, we used a dragon motif, but as a rule for the X series bosses, fantasy characters are not real creatures and are difficult to understand, so I was prohibited from using them. Well, I broke that rule again this time. (laugh) His attack method was easy to imagine and he looked cool, so I decided on him fairly quickly. The fact that his attack method resembles Eagle's is because I was heavily influenced by Xtreme, which I was making at the same time, so I made them similar on purpose." - (Developer Comments)[4]
- "He's a soldier, so he has a military uniform (as you can see). I like him quite a bit, but I'd still like to rework the wings. When I was drawing this, I was listening to the theme song of Captain Tsubasa over and over. Thus we have the wings (tsubasa)... I wonder if he'll make use of them." - (SEITO, Designer Comments)[4]
- "Whale, Pegasus, and Dinorex were designed by Higurashi. They are simple yet refined, without a lot of unnecessary parts. Maybe it's just because I've been working on robots for so long, but my designs always seem to end up more cumbersome (laugh)." - (Haruki Suetsugu)[1]
Nomenclature
Language | Name | Origin |
---|---|---|
Japanese | Spiral Pegacion (スパイラル・ペガシオン) | "Pegacion" is derived from the mythological creature, the "pegasus". |
English | Spiral Pegasus / The Skiver | "The Skiver", his name in the initial English release of Mega Man X5, was inspired by Michael "High in the Sky" Monroe, a frequent collaborator with the rock band Guns N' Roses. In the game's Mega Man X Legacy Collection 2 re-release, his name was changed to "Spiral Pegasus" to better reflect his original Japanese name. |
