The ZX era is a fan-made term referring to media set in the fictional universe of Mega Man ZX, released in 2006 for the Nintendo DS. It is the fourth era of the universe's original timeline, being a sequel to the Zero era now set in the year 25XX, chronicling the events of the Game of Destiny, wherein warriors called Mega Men transform using Biometal to battle for the fate of the world.

In official Capcom material, such media is referred to as simply Mega Man ZX.

Timeline

Prologue

After the Zero era, humans and Reploids united in peace. Secretly, a scientist named Albert studied the ruins of Ragnarok, discovering that the soul of Dr. Weil had fused with it and the resulting combination, Biometal, could grant godlike power. Albert processed it into pieces called Model W and hid them underground, letting them feed on the evil in the world. Their influence evolved Mechaniloids into wild Mavericks, dividing the world into two classes: peaceful urban areas called Innerpeace, and a dangerous wilderness called the Outlands.

A global government called Legion was formed by a trio of wisemen called the Sage Trinity: Master Thomas, Master Mikhail, and Master Albert. Laws were made to enforce human and Reploid equality, giving humans bionic body parts (becoming Humanoids) and limiting the powers and lifespans of Reploids. In the process, Albert was secretly seeking individuals worthy of Model W, infusing them with his DNA so they could one day help its growth.

As Maverick attacks increased, a defense group called the Guardians was formed by Ciel. When the Guardians excavated a piece of Model W, a member named Serpent went mad and stole it. Serpent would go on to form Slither Inc., an energy corporation that covered up his crimes. Using the data she had collected, Ciel made six of her own Biometals in response, including Model X and Model Z, hoping that someone would use their powers to fight back against Model W.

Mega Man ZX

Vent/Aile is an orphaned Humanoid delivery person who works for Girouette. When they deliver a package containing Model X to the Guardians, they discover they are capable of Megamerging with it to gain powers. Soon after learning that Girouette holds Model Z, he is killed by Serpent, sending Vent/Aile on a journey with the Guardians to uncover the evil plot Serpent has in store, using both Model X and Z.

Though they steal back the Biometals from Slither Inc., Vent/Aile's hatred for Serpent ends up awakening his Model W and granting him evil power. They defeat him and destroy his work, returning to the Guardians after meeting the late Girouette as a Cyber-elf.

Mega Man ZX Advent

With the fall of Slither Inc., the Tech Rush begins, wherein registered Hunters and illegal Raiders seek more ancient technologies to take their place. The mysterious Reploid Grey/boisterous Humanoid Ashe joins the Hunters, and they end up finding they are compatible with a Biometal, Model A. When they meet four other Mega Men who are all seeking pieces of Model W, they decide to find out what's going on.

Master Albert is revealed as the mastermind behind this Game of Destiny, and with the help of his Mega Men, combines the Model Ws into Ouroboros. Grey/Ashe face him, and despite learning they are his offspring and meant to be his servants, destroy both him and Ouroboros.

A secret ending shows Master Thomas uniting with the four Mega Men for some dark plot, but this thread has remained a cliffhanger, as the planned sequel "Rockman ZXC" was never finished.

Thousands of years later, the Legends era occurs.
