Byte, known as Mandarela BB (マンダレーラBB) in Japan, is a character and antagonist in the X era, serving as a boss in Mega Man X3. He is a Reploid created by Dr. Doppler to protect Dopple Town as the Nightmare Police, alongside his partner Bit.
Byte is distinguished by his hefty red armor, with yellow, blue, and grey decals inspired by East Asian spiritualism.
In the Games
Mega Man X3
In Mega Man X3, Byte first shows himself in the cutscene that plays after the player destroys two Maverick bosses. Dr. Doppler orders Bit and Byte to capture X for him, preferably alive, and they depart.
After this cutscene, Byte may randomly appear as a mid-boss in the sixth, seventh, or eighth Maverick stage X visits. Defeating Byte normally causes him to retreat and stop appearing. However, if the player lands the final blow using his weakness (Tornado Fang or Ray Splasher), Byte explodes upon his defeat and is destroyed. This stops him from appearing in Doppler Stage A later in the game.
If Byte retreats, he returns at the end of Doppler Stage A. Regardless of whether or not Bit was destroyed, Byte transforms his body into Godkarmachine O Inary, having been upgraded by Dr. Doppler to defeat X. Once the player destroys Godkarmachine, Byte perishes.
Mega Man X DiVE
In Mega Man X DiVE, Byte appears as several Maverick Data bosses. In the game's Story mode, he is fought as a boss twice. The first time is his base form in Chapter 11 in Oil Field 11-6, and his defeat unlocks the Chip for Overpower. The second time is him wielding the new Gravity Gear technology, in Chapter 15 in Super-Electromagnetic Lab Stage 15-6.
A Valentine's Day-themed variant of Byte, called Byte VD, appeared as a boss in the Valentine's Day 2022 Event, "Idol! Music! Valentines Day!".

Trivia
- Byte's design is heavily inspired by East Asian culture and religions, including Shinto and Hinduism.
- His original Japanese name, Mandarela BB, is derived from the Sanskrit "mandala", a concentric diagram with spiritual significance in both Buddhism and Hinduism.
- Much of his design seems inspired by the Nio in Buddhism, the muscular guardians of Buddha. This is evident in his scowling face, his loincloth-like faulds, the hagoromo-like ring over his shoulders, and his muscular build with a prominent belly.
- His weaknesses may reference one of the tales of how the Nio came into the service of Buddha; one tale held that the Nio were originally a duo of thieves who brutally robbed anyone they came across, until they were brought to penance upon encountering the light and compassion (bringing to mind Ray Splasher) of Buddha.
