Wood Man (or Woodman) is a Robot Master first appearing in Mega Man 2. He is one of the eight Robot Masters built by Dr. Wily to get revenge after his initial defeat in the first Mega Man, making him part of the first batch to be built entirely by Wily.

Wood Man is a nature-based robot whose signature weapon - the Leaf Shield - allows him to surround himself with leaves, which not only deflect shots, but can also be used offensively.

In the Games

Mega Man 2

Boss sprite from Mega Man 2.

In Mega Man 2, Wood Man is one of the main bosses that can be selected from the start and the 5th listed on the stage select screen, in reading order. His stage is set in a robotic forest with large, hollow trees and enemies that are exclusively animal-based, playing on the character's nature theme.

In battle, Wood Man is capable of beating his chest to summon a protective shield of four leaves around him, as well as sending four additional leaves up into the air, which sway quickly from side to side as they fall back down in preset positions. He follows this up by throwing his shield straight forward, which continues to block Mega Man's shots even while moving and can harm him if he does not jump over it. Once the shield has been thrown, Wood Man leaps forward and leaves himself open to attacks for a few seconds before repeating his patterns once all the leaves are gone.

Wood Man has multiple weaknesses, his main one being Atomic Fire, which can destroy him in one hit on Normal difficulty (or two on Difficult) when fully charged, but is blocked by his Leaf Shield. He is additionally weak to the Air Shooter, which deals 4 (8) points of damage and can bypass his shield if Mega Man stands close enough, as well as taking 2 (4) damage from the Metal Blade and Crash Bomber. Defeating Wood Man grants Mega Man the Leaf Shield, which works similarly for him as it does for Wood Man.

Mega Man 3

Although Wood Man does not appear in person in Mega Man 3, a Doc Robot using his data acts as the halfway boss of Shadow Man's Doc Robot stage. He behaves like the original Wood Man, but due to his increased size, the Leaf Shield he uses and throws is considerably larger and thus more difficult to jump over without taking damage.

Like other Doc Robots, he has two notable weaknesses from this game's weapon pool, in this case taking 4 damage from both the Needle Cannon and Search Snake.

Mega Man II

In Mega Man II on the Game Boy, Wood Man is one of the first batch of Robot Masters that can be selected, making him one of four Mega Man 2 bosses to have his own stage in a Game Boy game, his being based closely on his original one from the NES game.

As Heat Man (and thus Atomic Fire) does not appear in this game, Wood Man's primary weakness has changed to the Metal Blade, which deals 5 damage to him. He also takes 2 damage from the Crash Bomber, but is no longer weak to the Air Shooter. As before, beating him grants Mega Man the Leaf Shield.

Mega Man: The Power Battle

Wood Man appears as a boss in Mega Man: The Power Battle, voiced by Kôji Tobe[1] and appearing similar to his original artwork, though somewhat more squat.

Mega Man 8

In Mega Man 8, Wood Man is one of two Robot Masters from earlier games to appear as a miniboss in the Sega Saturn version of the game, the other being Cut Man.
