Watcher is an enemy first appearing in the original Mega Man. It a floating green sphere with eye stalks coming out of holes on the top and bottom, which extend or retract and can fire electricity from their eyes.
In the Games
In Mega Man, Watchers appear on three dedicated vertical screens of Elec Man's stage, and later reappear in a similar context in Dr. Wily stage 4. They are not immediately visible, but rather come flying in slowly from the top and bottom after a few seconds. They always appear in groups of six, which spawn in one by one in a consistent pattern (three in the upper left area, three in the lower right), no matter the stage or screen where they are encountered.
The eye stalks on the Watchers are retracted while they are far away from Mega Man, but extend as they inch closer, eventually shooting a horizontal beam of electricity from each eye once there is a chance of hitting the hero. The beams are very fast and deal 3 damage to Mega Man, as well as being able to knock him off the ladder featured on most screens with Watchers on them, which can make them troublesome to get past if Mega Man cannot destroy the Watcher before it shoots. After attacking, it also quickly retreats in the opposite direction it was moving, making it harder for Mega Man to destroy it for points or items.
Once a Watcher has left the screen at the top of bottom, it remains gone and no new ones will spawn, which leads to each Watcher screen eventually becoming empty by itself. The only way to bring them back is for Mega Man himself to leave and re-enter the screen, such as by falling and having to climb back up.
