Plant Man (or Plantman) is a Robot Master first appearing in Mega Man 6. Like the other Robot Masters from the game, he was built by an unspecified creator for the First Annual Robot Tournament before being stolen and reprogrammed by Dr. Wily in his Mr. X persona.

Plant Man's design is based on a flowering plant, possibly a kind of corpse flower, with large petals surrounding his head and thorny vines curling around his body. His signature weapon is the Plant Barrier, which creates a shield of petals around the user.

In the Games

Mega Man 6

Boss sprite from Mega Man 6.

In Mega Man 6, Plant Man is one of the main eight Robot Masters that must be fought to reach Mr. X's fortress, appearing as the fourth option on the stage select screen. His stage is the Forgotten Area, which resembles a tropical rainforest, and his title given in his boss intro is "Flower Fancier", making him one of only two Robot Masters in Mega Man 6 to not have a title with the format "Master of [blank]".

In battle, Plant Man fights similarly to Star Man from the previous game, creating a bullet-deflecting shield around himself and jumping across the room before throwing his shield forward at Mega Man. Apart from this attack, Plant Man can only cause damage by colliding with Mega Man, which he may try to do deliberately by running into him.

Plant Man is weak to the Blizzard Attack, which deals 4 damage to him, and he also takes 2 points of damage from Flame Blast, making him the only Robot Master in the game with a secondary weakness. Defeating him grants Mega Man the Plant Barrier, which he can use to create a shield, though unlike Plant Man, he cannot throw it. He also receives the Rush Jet Adaptor, allowing him to become Jet Mega Man.

Mega Man: The Power Battle

Plant Man appears as one of the bosses fought in the arcade game Mega Man: The Power Battle, where he is voiced by Hekiru Shiina[1].

Battle Network era

Plant Man has a Net Navi equivalent in PlantMan.EXE, whose design is more heavily based on the character's thorny vine theme, to the point of also being known as VineMan.EXE. He first appears in Mega Man Battle Network 3 and his Operator is Anetta.

Other appearances

Plant Man makes a cameo appearance in Mega Man 7, appearing in a glass case in the background of the Robot Museum stage. Oddly, he can be seen in the background twice (on the left side and the right), which may indicate that multiple copies of exist of him; however, as the glass cases are largely obscured by the foreground graphics, they may simply be repeated for simplicity.

Related Robot Masters

Plant Man is one of several Robot Masters that use a spinning shield as their signature move. Others include:

Trivia

  • Although Plant Man has not appeared in any Mega Man TV series, he and the other Robot Masters from Mega Man 6 briefly appear in animated form in that game's Japanese commercial.
  • The Mega Man 6 Robot Masters are implied to come from different countries all over the world, though their exact origins are not specified. Plant Man's theming suggests that he originates from a region with rainforests, such as Southeast Asia or South America.
  • The Mega Man X5 Maverick Spike Rosered bears some resemblance to Plant Man, both being humanoid plant-robots entangled in thorny vines.
