Submarine Flier[1] is an enemy appearing in Mega Man 6. It is a compact yellow submarine robot initially hidden inside a cloud, which enables it to fly.

In the Games

Mega Man 6

in-game sprite.

In Mega Man 6, Submarine Fliers are found only in the Ancient City (Centaur Man) stage, appearing close to the end. When first encountered, the enemy is hidden inside a cloud, flying to the left or right in a zig-zag pattern, with only its periscope and screw propeller peeking out. If Mega Man shoots at it twice, touches it, stands under it or it flies into a wall or ladder, the cloud vanishes and drops the submarine, which may either land in water or fall through the ground if it misses.

Once fully deployed in the water, the submarine proceeds to float on the surface and pursue Mega Man on the horizontal axis, periodically lobbing projectiles from its top in a low arc, which are most dangerous if Mega Man is below it. Despite being a submarine, it cannot go underwater.

Official Data

Submarine Flier appears under "Mega Man 6" in the Database in Mega Man Legacy Collection.

Submarine Flier
Made as a submarine that flies through the air. It's quite slow when flying around, so feel free to ignore it.

Related Enemies

The Submarine Flier appears based on an earlier "Flier" enemy that is likewise hidden in a cloud and changes behaviour once revealed.

  • Bomb Flier (Mega Man 3) - A missile hidden inside a cloud that flies in a wave motion, then goes straight forward when revealed.

Trivia

  • The Database gives the Submarine Flier's HP as 5, although the submarine itself has only 3 hitpoints. This is likely including the damage that the cloud can take before it dissipates, which can be circumvented entirely if it vanishes by itself.
  • The submarine's yellow colouration may be a reference to the popular Beatles song Yellow Submarine.
