Yamato Man (or Yamatoman) is a Robot Master first appearing in Mega Man 6. Like the other Robot Masters from the game, he was built by an unspecified creator for the First Annual Robot Tournament before being stolen and reprogrammed by Dr. Wily in his Mr. X persona.

Yamato Man's design is based on an ancient Japanese samurai, wearing purple armour and wielding a spear as a weapon, the Yamato Spear. He can use it to attack by firing the tip as a projectile, even firing multiple tips from the air, though he sometimes needs to retrieve a tip before being able to use it again.

In the Games

Mega Man 6

Boss sprite from Mega Man 6.

In Mega Man 6, Yamato Man is one of the main eight Robot Masters that must be fought to reach Mr. X's fortress, appearing as the sixth option (in reading order) on the stage select screen. His stage is the Impregnable Fortress, styled after a Japanese castle, and his title given in his boss intro is "Master of Spear".

In battle, Yamato Man has two attacks, both involving his spear: He can stand on the ground and spin it to fire the tip forward, or jump into the air while spinning it to launch three tips downward at once at the peak of his jump, aiming for Mega Man with the middle one. When firing on the ground, the tip will remain and fall straight down if it hits Mega Man or a wall, forcing Yamato Man to run towards it to pick it up before he can attack again.

His weakness is the Silver Tomahawk, which deals 4 damage per hit and can reach him during his jump attacks due to its trajectory. Defeating him grants Mega Man the Yamato Spear, which lets him fire shield-piercing spear tips rapidly, similarly to the Needle Cannon.

Battle Network era

Yamato Man has a NetNavi equivalent localised outside of Japan as JapanMan.EXE, with a similar, but blue design. He appears as a secret boss in Mega Man Battle Network 3 and has no operator.

His light armor makes him especially mobile. He uses a spear to attack, but it's pretty dumb how he has to go retrieve it.

Trivia

  • Although Yamato Man has not appeared in any Mega Man TV series, he and the other Robot Masters from Mega Man 6 briefly appear in animated form in that game's Japanese commercial.[1]
  • The Mega Man 6 Robot Masters are implied to come from different countries all over the world, though their exact origins are not specified. It can be assumed that Yamato Man represents Japan, due to being based on a samurai and "Yamato" being a historical name for the country, a point that is further driven home by his Net Navi's English name being JapanMan.
