Bright Man (or Brightman) is a Robot Master first appearing in Mega Man 4 and is one of the eight Robot Masters originally built by Dr. Cossack.

Bright Man is a fat, orange robot with a large lightbulb on top of his head. His weapon, the Flash Stopper, allows him to create a bright flash of light that stops time for his enemies, then attack them with shots from his buster.

Mega Man 4

Boss sprite from Mega Man 4.

In Mega Man 4, Bright Man is one of the main eight Robot Master bosses and appears as the last choice (in reading order) on the stage select screen. His stage is set inside a power plant, with gimmick enemies that can turn the lights off or back on when shot.

Bright Man spends most of his battle not using his time-stopping power, but rather jumping around and firing generic shots, which he can aim slightly upwards or downwards. If he does opt to use it, Mega Man will become frozen in place, where he remains until he takes damage from one of Bright Man's projectiles or his body. This makes the attack unavoidable, but as Bright Man can only decide to use it at specific amounts of remaining health - 16, 8, or 4 - he can be prevented from using it entirely by carefully playing around these numbers.

Bright Man's weakness is the Rain Flush from Toad Man, which deals 4 damage per hit, just enough to destroy him by using up all of its weapon power. Defeating him grants Mega Man the Flash Stopper.

Battle Network era

Bright Man has a NetNavi equivalent in BrightMan.EXE, who reinterprets his theme with glowing eyes and cables rather than a lightbulb. He appears as a boss in Mega Man Network Transmission and his operator is unknown.

Bright Man
Emits light at ten million watts. Those who see the light become unable to move. As long as you avoid that, he's not that hard to defeat.

  • Bright Man being "long on ideas" according to his Mega Man & Bass CD is a reference to a quote by Thomas Edison, often credited with the invention of the lightbulb: "I am long on ideas, but short on time."
