A type of Metall,[1] also known as Met,[2] appears as an enemy in the original Mega Man and various games reusing content from it. It is the first Metall variety to appear in the Mega Man franchise, known simply by its base name rather than a specific model identification, although its design is distinct from most of its many descendants.

While the Metall establishes the basic traits found in most later versions, like the impenetrable hard hat and spread shot, it lacks feet or any other discernible features, apart from a pair of lazy-looking eyes. As such, it cannot move and is limited to merely peeking out from under its helmet, just long enough to attack.

In the Games

Despite the iconic status and ubiquitousness of many later varieties, Metalls in Mega Man appear only in Guts Man Stage, where three are found at the beginning and four more in the boss door corridor. Like most Metalls, they start out hidden under their helmets, completely invincible, until Mega Man comes near. When he does, they tip the helmet back to reveal their vulnerable eyes and fire three shots at once, going diagonally upwards, straight ahead, and diagonally down. These shots deal 2 damage, while contact with the Metall itself deals only 1.

To defeat a Metall, Mega Man must shoot it during its brief window of vulnerability, which is somewhat shorter than on many later versions of the enemy. Doing so early enough can prevent its shots from coming out, rewarding fast reaction times.

Mega Man: Dr. Wily's Revenge

In Mega Man: Dr. Wily's Revenge, the original Metall reappears alongside the Neo Metall from Mega Man 2 (both referred to simply as "Metalls" in the credits). With Guts Man not appearing in the game, they have been relocated to its version of Elec Man's stage, and also appear with Neo Metalls in Dr. Wily stage 1.

They act similarly to their first incarnation, but attack twice in quick succession if left intact, with a pause in between attack cycles. They also deal more damage, taking away 3 points of health with both their shots and bodies. Their shots are closer together, however, making it easier to jump over all three of them.

Mega Man III

Though not a common enemy, a single original Metall makes a cameo in Dr. Wily stage 2 of Mega Man III, hiding among Metall EVs. It acts the same as it did in Dr. Wily's Revenge, but its shots deal only 2 damage now. Its helmet graphics when hiding are also slightly faulty, with the top of the helmet being shifted one pixel to the right; the same effect appears on a Neo Metall likewise cameoing in the stage.

Official Data

Metall appears under "Mega Man" in the Database in Mega Man Legacy Collection.
