EX Skill

From Mega Man Wiki
EX Skills in Mega Man Zero 2.

An EX Skill (EXスキル) is a type of ability in the Zero era. It was initially a powerful attack used by bosses when Zero is at a high Level. Starting in Mega Man Zero 2, Zero can obtain EX Skills of his own as an evolution of the Techniques from the X era. However, they are only obtained if the boss is defeated under certain circumstances; otherwise, the EX Skill is not obtained in that playthrough.

In the Games

Mega Man Zero

In Mega Man Zero, only bosses use EX Skills. They only do so if Zero is at Level A or higher. These abilities are usually extra powerful or difficult to avoid, increasing the difficulty of the boss battle. To see the EX Skills of each boss, see their respective pages.

Mega Man Zero 2

EX Skills for Zero debuted in Mega Man Zero 2. The player must complete the stage and defeat the boss with a Level A or higher in order to receive the EX Skill — in other words, Zero can only obtain the EX Skill if the boss is able to use theirs too.

There are four EX Skills available for the Buster Shot, four for the Z-Saber, one for the Shield Boomerang, and one for the Chain Rod. Once obtained, the player can toggle EX Skills on or off on the Sub Screen. Buster Shot skills can only be used one at a time, since they are all alterations to its Charge Shot and require the appropriate Element Chip to be equipped. If performed without the corresponding Element Chip, the skill will lack elemental properties. Oddly, Sharp Edge is the only Z-Saber EX Skill with a localized English name rather than a transliterated Japanese one.

Mega Man Zero 4

In Mega Man Zero 4, EX Skills are slightly altered. They are now dependent on weather conditions instead of rank — if the stage's weather favors the boss, then they can use their EX Skill and Zero can obtain one by defeating them. Additionally, Zero does not need to equip an Element Chip in order to use elemental EX Skills. There are four skills available for the Buster Shot and four for the Z-Saber, while there are none available for the Zero Knuckle.
