Technique
This article is a stub. You can help Mega Man Wiki by expanding it.
A Technique (必殺技)[note 1] is a recurring type of action performed by Zero in the X era. Similar to Special Weapons, they are special attacks that are often obtained by defeating Maverick bosses, though they are unique in that they are either performed via entering button combinations or serve as a permanent ability upgrade.
In the Games
Mega Man X4
Techniques were introduced in Mega Man X4, when Zero became a fully unique playable character for the first time. It is explained that Zero is equipped with a Learning (ラーニング)[1][2] system, meaning that after defeating a Maverick boss, he can absorb their DNA to learn a brand new combat technique.[3] These vary from advanced attacks that can be performed with button combinations, or passive abilities that permanently upgrade Zero. They all maintain their original Japanese names, albeit romanized in localization. Only one Technique, Rakuhouha, consumes Weapon Energy when used.
Uniquely, Mega Man X4 is the only game where not all of Zero's Techniques are weaknesses of Maverick bosses.

Mega Man X5
In Mega Man X5, many of Zero's new Techniques are similar to those that appeared previously in Mega Man X4; for example, only the Giga Attack C-Flasher consumes Weapon Energy, just like its predecessor Rakuhouha. Unlike in X4, or most games in the future, the names of Zero's Techniques in X5 were translated into English in the localization process.
As the boss Awakened Zero, Zero uses several unique Techniques including Shin Messenkō, Shingetsurin, and Genmu Zero.

Mega Man Xtreme 2
In Mega Man Xtreme 2, Zero can only learn the four Techniques of the Mavericks in Zero Mission at first. He can then learn the other four Techniques once Extreme Mode is played. Some of his Techniques are similar to X's Special Weapon equivalents, such as his Fire Wave. Additionally, Zero only has one Weapon Energy gauge, which is shared by multiple different Techniques. Unlike Mega Man X5, the English names of Zero's Techniques in this game were present in the Japanese version as well.

Mega Man X6
In Mega Man X6, Zero's unique Techniques return to maintaining their Japanese names. Two of them, however, are merely slightly altered versions of X's Special Weapon equivalents and thus share their English names. Unlike in Mega Man Xtreme 2, any Technique that consumes Weapon Energy has its own individual gauge.
