A Buster (バスター)[1] is a recurring type of weapon in the Mega Man franchise. It is an arm-mounted projectile weapon that is often equipped in place of a hand.

Original timeline

Busters first appear in the Classic era, used by the robot creations of Dr. Light. The most notable example is Mega Man, who is capable of freely converting either of his hands into a buster to shoot projectiles from the barrel. It appears Mega Man only wields a buster on one hand at a time, with some exceptions such as Super Adventure Rockman.

Some characters, such as Air Man, are always equipped with a buster on one arm and are never shown converting it into a hand. Other characters, such as Fire Man, have busters equipped on both arms and are never shown converting them into hands. Crash Man's data in Mega Man & Bass suggests that he is incapable of converting his, mentioning clumsy hands as a weakness.

In the X era, busters continue to be used by Reploids, including X, Zero, and a variety of Maverick bosses. However, they grow less common as the series goes on: Mega Man X4 was the final game in the series to have Mavericks equipped with busters (Storm Owl and Jet Stingray).

In the Zero era, true arm-mounted busters remain a rarity. Zero's main ranged weapon is the Buster Shot, which is more like a typical firearm, and Fighting Fefnir wields two cannons called Sodom and Gomorrah reminiscent of busters. Copy X, some Pantheons, and a few Mutos Reploids are the only ones seen to wield arm-mounted busters.

In the ZX era, busters are very rare. Model X wields its own X Buster, and Galleon Hunters have their own too. Model ZX wields a firearm more like a Buster Shot called the ZX Buster, and Model F wields two cannons called Knuckle Busters like Fefnir's Sodom and Gomorrah.
