A Special Weapon (特殊武器)[1] is a recurring type of weapon in the X era. They are unique attacks that are obtained by defeating Maverick bosses. They consume Weapon Energy when used, but offer new advantages over default weapons, such as dealing increased damage to specific bosses or weakening their abilities.

X's X-Buster is equipped with a Variable Weapons System (武器可変システム)[1] that similarly allows him to incorporate the abilities of defeated Maverick bosses to use Special Weapons. Zero uses a similar system called Learning (ラーニング)[2] that allows him to learn from the abilities of Maverick bosses to devise his own Techniques, similar to Special Weapons. Axl uses his Copy Chip to copy the abilities of Maverick bosses to use Special Weapons. Vile's usage of Maverick weapons is never explained in lore; nevertheless, he has his own Vile's Weapons.
