X (イクス) (pronounced /ˈiks/ instead of /ˈɛks/),[1] often written as "iX" by non-Japanese fans, is a character who appears throughout the Rockman X Mega Mission series. He is an evil doppelganger of X created by the Mother Limited, who seeks to destroy the original.

In Rockman X Mega Mission 3, he revives himself as Return iX (リターンイクス), or RX for short. In Rockman X Mega Mission 4, he returns again as Grow iX (グロウイクス), or GX for short.

Other Media

Rockman X Mega Mission

iX debuted in Rockman X Mega Mission. After X defeats Schmitt, Schmitt retreats to the Mother Limited in hopes that it can heal him. Instead, the Mother Limited absorbs him and uses the data it has gathered on X to create an evil clone, who calls himself iX. He then fights X, nearly defeating him, but this triggers the self-preservation of the Limited in X's buster, granting X the Clear Armor. X and iX trade final blows, with iX's destroying the Clear Armor, while X's destroys iX entirely.

File RX2: Mega Mission

In the manga adaptation, File RX2: Mega Mission, iX first appears as a manifestation of X's Limited infection in a vision. He urges X to give in to its influence and accept its power, and can be seen at X's side whenever he does give in. At the climax of X's battle with the physical iX created by the Mother Limited, the illusory iX fades away along with the Clear Armor.

Rockman X Mega Mission 3

iX returns in Rockman X Mega Mission 3. His core survived his previous defeat, and he eventually revived himself through sheer willpower as Return iX. He arrives just in time to defeat all four Hyper Limited Reploids so he can fight X alone. As RX is about to beat X, Enemice shoots him in the back and reveals himself as the mastermind behind the Hyper Limited.

To stand a chance against Enemice, RX transforms himself into the iX Armor for X and Zero. They use his power to defeat Enemice, then combine the armor into the All iX Armor to face Sigma Limited too. To deal the final blow, X uses RX's power to summon two busters and fire a blast that destroys Sigma Limited, but neutralizes the All iX Armor in the process. However, a portion of RX absorbs the power of Enemice's Sigma Chip to survive, plotting his eventual rematch with X.

Rockman X Mega Mission 4

iX returns in Rockman X Mega Mission 4. Having survived thanks to the Sigma Chip, Return iX comes across a Light Capsule. To make use of it, he infects the capsule with the Limited and uses it to gain a new form: Grow iX. He then organizes a battalion called the GX Army and creates Confuse A Stoner to lead them, mobilizing for his final battle with X.

Grow iX sends the GX Army to fight X and Zero, but they are all destroyed. He then fights them himself, but cannot beat X's new Grow Up Armor. Frustrated, GX finds that the Light Capsule has evolved into a new Mother Limited, so he fuses with it to become Doppler iX (ドップラーイクス). Though the details were left ambiguous, Doppler iX finally attempted a suicide attack on X and Zero, which apparently destroyed him for good.

Behind the Scenes

Nomenclature

Language Name Origin
Japanese X (イクス) Pronounced "eeks", X (イクス) is a corruption of X (エックス)'s name, made by changing the first sound "エッ" (ɛ) to a "イ" (i) instead. Since there is no way to display an alternate pronunciation of a lone Latin letter "X", non-Japanese fans often write his name out as "iX" instead.
