X, occasionally referred to as Mega Man X (or variant spellings thereof) and known as Rockman X in Japan, is the main protagonist and player character in the X era Mega Man games. He was built by Dr. Light as the first reploid, a new kind of robot able to think and feel like a human and choose his own destiny, and his systems are the base for most of the later reploids.

In the games, X takes the role of a Maverick Hunter, disabling or destroying reploids that have turned to crime (gone maverick). Similarly to the original Mega Man, he is able to do so using both his X-Buster - based on the Mega Buster - and the weapons that he copies from his opponents. Later games' stories also show him as a pacifist, who is repeatedly forced to fight again due to the situations evolving around him.

Mega Man X

Prior to the events of the first Mega Man X, X is discovered by Dr. Cain in the year 21XX when he excavates the remain of Dr. Light's lab. He finds X placed inside a large capsule - 14 metres high and 8 metres wide[1] - where he has been hibernating for the past 100 years, constantly performing checks to ensure that he will pose no danger to humanity when he is awakened. Impressed by X's capabilities after releasing him, Dr. Cain convinces him to assist him in creating new reploids based on Dr. Light's systems. When these new and less sophisticated reploids start to go maverick, a council decides to form the Maverick Hunters, tasked with dispatching the irregulars, but disaster strikes again when their leader, Sigma, goes maverick himself, taking his squad with him. X volunteers to become a fighter and join the Maverick Hunters, now led by Zero, to go after Sigma and his allies.[1]

X has little dialogue throughout the game, so it is difficult to tell how he feels about the game's events. He is shown to be weaker than Zero at the start of the game, losing a battle to Vile and his Ride Armor in the intro stage until Zero intervenes. Nonetheless, he is tasked by Zero to take on the main eight mavericks while he scouts ahead for information on Sigma's fortress, which X is able to do unaided. Upon arriving at the fortress, X and Zero split up so the latter can keep the "main defense force" busy while X slips in. They meet up again later in the first Sigma stage, when X is stopped by Vile. Despite Zero's attempts to weaken him, Vile still proves too strong for X, leading Zero to sacrifice himself to destroy his Ride Armor and render him vulnerable to X's attacks. Zero acknowledges in his dying breaths how much stronger X has become, and he continues through the fortress by himself, eventually destroying Sigma.

X begins the game equipped only with his X-Buster, as well as the ability to cling to and jump up walls. By defeating mavericks, he can obtain their weapons to add to his repertoire, which he can cycle through quickly using the L and R buttons. Over the course of the game, he can also find Dr. Light capsules, each containing a hologram of Dr. Light and an armour upgrade for a part of his body. These include new torso armour to reduce damage taken; the ability to break certain blocks with his head; charging the maverick weapons he obtains, plus a new charge level for his X-Buster, an upgrade also given to him by Zero after his sacrifice if X has not obtained it yet; and a dash, the only non-optional upgrade from a capsule, which would become a baseline ability of the character in later games.

Similarly to the Classic Mega Man, X can refill his energy and weapon power by collecting certain capsules found throughout stages or dropped by enemies. He may also use sub-tanks to refill his health at any time, which can be found in the maverick stages and charged with life energy pick-ups. Additionally, hidden heart tanks will permanently increase his maximum energy when found and thus the amount of hits he can take. If X has already cleared a stage, he can use an escape unit while inside to return to the stage select.[2]
