Napalm Man (or Napalmman) is a Robot Master appearing in Mega Man 5. He is one of the Robot Masters ostensibly working for Proto Man in a bid for world domination, though like the others, he is later revealed to have been created by Dr. Wily.

Napalm Man is a heavily armed purple robot with large missiles on both hands and his head, smaller missiles on his shoulders, and tank treads on his feet. He is able to fire these missiles to attack, as well as launching Napalm Bombs high into the air.

In the Games

Mega Man 5

Boss sprite from Mega Man 5.

In Mega Man 5, Napalm Man is one of the main eight Robot Master bosses and appears as the fourth choice (in reading order) on the stage select screen. His stage is set in a jungle and underground munitions factory.

In battle, Napalm Man has two main modes of operation, depending on Mega Man's distance from him. If Mega Man is far away, he will fire three missiles straight forward from his shoulders, one by one, then make a medium-length jump towards him. If Mega Man is close, he will launch two Napalm Bombs into the air an arc, which explode when they hit the ground, then make a long leap across the room.

Napalm Man's weakness is the Crystal Eye from Crystal Man, which deals only 3 damage per hit, but can sometimes hit him more than once per shot by taking advantage of the crystal's ability to split up when launching it against a wall. Defeating him grants Mega Man the Napalm Bomb weapon.

Mega Man Battle & Chase

Napalm Man appears as one of the racers in Mega Man Battle & Chase, where he drives the Patriot Bomber, a vehicle fitted with a cowcatcher and tank treads. It maximum speed is 436, only slightly faster than Guts Man's Wild Arms, but just like that vehicle, it goes faster when driving on dirt, with its maximum speed increasing to 460.

Napalm Man is able to leave Mines behind, which explode after a while or when someone drives into them, though he has a limit of 2 mines that he can place at a time. He can also throw his Napalm Bombs in an arc, which explode in an area when they hit the ground; the arc can be fine-tuned by pressing up or down, though aiming the bombs can be difficult.

His home course is the Arms Factory Course, a track heavy with conveyor belts and deceleration zones.

Battle Network era

Napalm Man has a Net Navi equivalent in NapalmMan.EXE (MoltanicMan.EXE in the English MegaMan NT Warrior dub), with a very similar design and abilities. He first appears in Mega Man Battle Network 2 with no operator, but later joins Team ProtoMan in Mega Man Battle Network 5 under the control of Fyrefox.

1994 animated series

In the 1994 animated series, Napalm Man appears with a similar design to his in-game one, apart from his head being more clearly separated from his torso. He is part of the show's intro, where he is shown firing missiles from his shoulders, but strangely does not appear in any of the episodes. This makes him the only Robot Master to appear in the intro exclusively.

Official Data

Mega Man & Bass CD

In Mega Man & Bass, Napalm Man's CD is oddly located in Dynamo Man's stage, rather than the more thematically fitting Burner Man's. It is buried in the corridor leading to the Move Cannon sub-boss and can only be dug up by Mega Man using Rush Search.

Mega Man Legacy Collection Database

Napalm Man appears under "Mega Man 5" in the Database in Mega Man Legacy Collection and is the second-to-last Robot Master listed for the game. Like other Robot Masters, he can be fought by pressing a designated button while viewing his data.

Trivia

  • Unused graphics for an additional kind of missile can be found with Napalm Man's graphics in Mega Man 5. This missile is very small and might have been intended to be launched from his shoulders at one point; in the final game, a much larger missile resembling that in his head cannon is fired from the shoulders, whereas the head cannon never fires.[1]
