Mega Man 4, known in Japan as Rockman 4: Aratanaru Yabō!! (ロックマン4 新たなる野望!!, Rokkuman 4 Aratanaru Yabō!!, "Rockman 4: A New Evil Ambition!!") is the fourth Main series game in the Classic era of the Mega Man series, developed and published by Capcom and released for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1991-1993.

Story

Mega Man and Dr. Light receive a call from Dr. Cossack.

With Dr. Wily still missing after the events of Mega Man 3, a new threat emerges when Siberian scientist Dr. Cossack gives humanity an ultimatum to surrender to him or face destruction at the hands of his eight Robot Masters. Joined again by his canine companion Rush as well as new ally, the suitcase robot Eddie, Mega Man heads to Russia by train to take on this new enemy.

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

After defeating all the Robot Masters and making his way through Dr. Cossack's citadel, Mega Man encounters Dr. Cossack, piloting the Cossack Catcher. However, as he is about to destroy the machine, Proto Man teleports in with Cossack's daughter Kalinka in tow, who begs Mega Man not to harm her father, revealing that Dr. Wily had been blackmailing Cossack by kidnapping her. Shortly after, Dr. Wily shows up, yelling at Proto Man for betraying him before retreating to his own fortress.

Kalinka helps Mega Man investigate Dr. Wily's fortress.[1] Fighting his way through it, he eventually encounters the Wily Machine 4 and destroys it. However, Wily escapes unharmed and retreats deeper into the fortress, where he waits for Mega Man with the Wily Capsule. After destroying the capsule, the fortress collapses, and Mega Man takes a train from a nearby station back to his home, where Dr. Light and Roll are waiting for him.

Characters

Mega Man

Mega Man.

The protagonist and player character. Formerly a human-like household robot designed by Dr. Light, Rock was reconfigured into the fighting robot Mega Man to stop Dr. Wily's plans. He has the ability to take and use his enemies' weapons as he defeats them, allowing him to exploit their weaknesses.

Dr. Light

The brilliant scientist who created Mega Man, his sister Roll, and several other advanced robots. He has once again sent Mega Man on a mission to preserve world peace, this time pairing him up not just with the robot dog Rush, but also his robotic suitcase, Eddie.

Dr. Wily

Dr. Wily.

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

Dr. Light's rival scientist, who has been missing since the last game. He turns out to be the manipulating force behind Dr. Cossack, blackmailing him by kidnapping his daughter.

Dr. Cossack

Dr. Cossack.

The Russian scientist, Dr. Mikhail Sergeyevich Cossack, has unexpectedly announced his plans to take over the world with his eight Robot Masters. Mega Man must travel to his Siberian citadel and stop him.

Kalinka

Kalinka.

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

Dr. Cossack's only daughter. She has been kidnapped by Dr. Wily to blackmail her father, but is rescued by Proto Man and helps Mega Man by investigating Dr. Wily's fortress.

Proto Man

Proto Man's sprite.

Mega Man's brother and prototype, who seems to be going his own ways after his various altercations with Mega Man in Mega Man 3. He works behind the scenes to rescue Kalinka from Wily while Mega Man goes after Cossack.

Rush

Rush's sprite.

Mega Man's canine companion, who makes his first appearance in this game. Rush can be called to transform into various forms or vehicles that aid Mega Man's movement, with his Rush Coil springboard form being available from the start. Other transformations can be unlocked throughout the game.

Eddie

Eddie.

Dr. Light's cybernetic suitcase, known in the manual as Flip-Top. He shows up at set points in various stages to grant Mega Man a random helpful item, such as Energy or a 1 UP. If Mega Man leaves the screen without taking it, Eddie will be back with a different item when Mega Man returns.

Roll

Roll's sprite.

Mega Man's sister, a household robot who helps Dr. Light around his lab. She only appears in the ending, picking up Mega Man from the train station with Dr. Light.

Gameplay

Like most games in the Classic era, Mega Man 4 is a side-scrolling platformer. Players take control of Mega Man, who can run, jump, slide, shoot and climb on ladders to make his way through eight Robot Master stages in any order before taking on the more linear "fortress" stages. Defeating a Robot Master grants Mega Man his weapon, and sometimes a new mobility item from Dr. Light; all of these can be used in place of the standard Mega Buster in exchange for weapon energy, which is recharged when Mega Man picks up certain items found throughout stages and dropped by enemies. Bosses (as well as some smaller enemies) are typically weak to one or more special weapons, which can be used to take them down more easily and quickly than with the Mega Buster alone. He may also collect up to 9 Energy Tanks from the stages, which can be used at any time for a one-time full health refill.

Like many Mega Man sequels, Mega Man 4 strongly builds on its predecessor(s) and plays very similarly, but also brings something new to the table. The main addition to this game is the ability to charge the Mega Buster (now called "New Mega Buster") by holding down the fire button, with a partial charge resulting in a larger shot and a full charge firing an even larger one that deals triple damage. Also new is the robotic suitcase Eddie, who appears at set points in some stages to give Mega Man a random collectible item. Rush returns as a mobility tool for Mega Man, boasting the same standard "Coil" (springboard) and unlockable "Jet" and "Marine" (submarine) forms as in the previous game; however, his Rush Jet form has been changed to a platform more akin to the original Item-2, flying forward constantly and only allowing Mega Man to steer it up and down rather than having full control.

Mega Man 4 is the first game in the series to feature completely optional upgrades, appearing here in the form of the Balloon Adapter and Wire Adapter, two supplemental mobility tools/weapons that can only be acquired by finding them hidden in two of the Robot Master stages. It is also the first game to feature two distinct "fortresses" that must be played one after the other to complete the game, a concept that would be repeated for the next two numbered installments.
