A Mega Man, known as a Rockman (ロックマン) in Japan, alternatively known as a Chosen One (選ばれし者), is a special type of individual appearing in the ZX era. They are any people who have biological data that is compatible to interface with Biometal, allowing them to access its powers via the M.E.G.A. System ("Meta-Encapsulated Granule Awareness"), known as the R.O.C.K. System (R.O.C.K.システム) ("Rebirth of Crystallized Knowledge") in Japan.

In the Games

Mega Man ZX

Mega Men are introduced in Mega Man ZX. Vent/Aile discover they are a Mega Man when they first interface with Model X, in a process known as Megamerge, or Rock On (ロックオン) in Japan. When first Megamerging, Model X states "Biolink Established", bonding to Vent/Aile so they are the only one who can use it. They soon learn that their boss, Girouette, is also a Mega Man who wields Model Z, before meeting the evil Mega Man Serpent who wields a fragment of Model W.

When Giro passes away, he bestows his Model Z upon Vent/Aile, who discovers that Model X can Double Megamerge to combine with Model Z, forming the powerful Model ZX. They set out to recover the other four Biometal from the Pseudoroids, special Reploids who use the powers of Biometal but are not true Mega Men. Using Model X's Double Megamerge, Vent/Aile can interface with these Biometal as well.

In Mega Man ZX, the nature of Mega Men is a mystery. Prairie and the Guardians hypothesize that Mega Men are survivors of Maverick attacks, and can use Biometal due to their diligent souls. Fistleo the Predatoroid implies that Mavericks spare future Mega Men on purpose, as if they can sense their potential to become Mega Men.

Mega Man ZX Advent

The true nature of Mega Men is explored in Mega Man ZX Advent. The mysterious Grey/Ashe discovers they are a Mega Man compatible with Model A, who has lost its memory, and together they work to slowly uncover their pasts and learn more about Mega Men. They do so by fighting other Mega Men, including Aeolus, Thetis, Atlas, Siarnaq, and Vent/Aile, whose DNA data unlocks Ciphers in Model A's database.

The Ciphers reveal that the first Biometal, Model W, was created by Albert. He placed a biological lock on it, preventing anyone with different biological data from using it. Then, to get other individuals to help him awaken Model W, Albert began using his position in the Sage Trinity to survey people from all over the world and insert his DNA data into those he deemed worthy. When Ciel later created the six Biometal found in Mega Man ZX, she based them on Model W, including copying the biological lock from Model W. Model A was also created by Albert, sharing the same lock. Thus, a Mega Man is simply one who carries the data of Albert in their body; another term is Biomatch (適合者).
