Gemini Man (or Geminiman) is a Robot Master first appearing in Mega Man 3. He is one of the Robot Masters created by Dr. Light and Dr. Wily to search alien worlds for energy crystals so they could power their peace-keeping robot, Gamma. Like his fellow Robot Masters, he becomes part of Dr. Wily's evil plan, and has since been cast as a villain in most of his appearances.

Gemini Man is a blue and silver robot with an ice-like crystal on his helmet and a reflective chestplate, whose most unique trait is his ability to create a clone (twin) of himself that mimics his moves until it is destroyed. His weapon, the Gemini Laser, fires a long laser beam that reflects off walls.

In the Games

Mega Man 3

Boss sprite from Mega Man 3.

In Mega Man 3, Gemini Man is one of the main bosses that can be selected from the start and the sixth listed on the stage select screen, in reading order. His stage is set on a strange alien planet made of crystals and organic matter, which features water and large quantities of tadpole eggs.

In battle, Gemini Man starts the fight by creating a clone of himself, after which both Gemini Men enter a rigid and synchronised pattern of running across the room left-to-right before jumping back to their starting point. Though they do not attack unprovoked, the Gemini Man on the ground will counter-attack whenever Mega Man fires a shot, shooting a projectile in his general direction as both Gemini Men freeze in place. To proceed to the next phase of the fight, Mega Man must take down the boss's health meter to half or less, with both robots sharing the same health pool.

Once their health drops to half, whichever Gemini Man took the final hit will disappear, while the other changes into a completely new pattern, walking left and right and jumping when Mega Man shoots. In this phase, he becomes able to fire the Gemini Laser, which sticks around for an extended period of time by bouncing diagonally off the walls, ceiling and floor of the room.

Gemini Man is weak to the Search Snake, which deals 5 damage per shot, and will also take 2 damage from the Hard Knuckle, Top Spin, Magnet Missile and Shadow Blade. Like all of Mega Man 3's Robot Masters, he also takes 4 damage from his own weapon during his Teleporter Room rematch. Defeating him awards Mega Man the Gemini Laser.

Mega Man III

Boss sprite from Mega Man III.

In Mega Man III on the Game Boy, Gemini Man is one of the first batch of Robot Masters, accessible from the start, and appears in the top-right corner. His stage is similar to his original one, and his battle is virtually the same.

Gemini Man's weakness remains the Search Snake, which now deals 3 damage to him, though he also takes 2 damage from both of the other special weapons available to Mega Man at this point. As before, defeating him grants Mega Man the Gemini Laser.

Mega Man Soccer

Gemini Man is one of the available players in Mega Man Soccer, tied with Ice Man for the highest speed stat of any regular player (excluding special character Dr. Wily). His special creates a copy of the ball, which cannot hit anything, but can be used to confuse the CPU players.

Official Data

Mega Man & Bass CD

Gemini Man's CD in Mega Man & Bass is located in Astro Man's stage, which shares a space theme with Gemini Man's own stage. It is buried at the bottom of the vertical section with Appearing Blocks and must be dug up by Mega Man using Rush Search.

Related Robot Masters

Though he has no ice-based attacks, Gemini Man incorporates an ice-like crystal in his design and is sometimes implied to be cold-related (such as explicitly being "weak to heat" in The Power Fighters), which would make him one of many such Robot Masters in the series.

Additionally, his ability to fight as two entities evokes similarities with the Clock Men from Rockman & Forte Mirai Kara no Chōsensha, as well as self-replicating bosses from other eras, such as Split Mushroom, Spike Rosered and Infinity Mijinion from the X era.

Trivia

  • Oddly, all the first batch Robot Masters in Mega Man III have a minor weakness (2 damage) to a weapon from the second batch, even though the lack of boss refights means they cannot be used against them without hacks. Gemini Man's weakness among these is the Dust Crusher.
  • In Mega Man 3, Snake Man, Gemini Man and Needle Man form their own closed "loop" of weapon weaknesses, meaning they are weak to each other's weapons but are not especially weak to, nor carry the main weakness of, any Robot Master outside the "loop".
  • There is a game-breaking bug in Mega Man 3 where destroying one Gemini Man at the exact moment the other is starting his jump can cause the remaining one to never enter his second phase, and subsequently disappear the next time he is hit. As this leaves Mega Man with no way to further harm the boss or die, he will be stuck in the boss room until the player resets the game.
