Fire Man (or Fireman) is a Robot Master first appearing in the original Mega Man, where he is one of the robots built by Dr. Light and stolen by Dr. Wily. He was designed for waste incineration, but was reprogrammed into a fighter by Wily.

Fire Man is a red and grey robot with a covered mouth and a burning torch on his head. His weapon is the Fire Storm, which allows him to fire large flame shots from his dual arm cannons that set the ground on fire.

In the Games

Mega Man

Boss sprite from Mega Man.

In the original Mega Man, Fire Man is one of the main six Robot Masters, appearing fifth (in reading order) on the stage select screen. His stage is set in a metal building filled with lava and fire-themed hazards.

In battle, Fire Man attempts to gain distance from Mega Man, turning around to blast him with a Fire Storm shot from time to time or when he himself is shot at. These shots move very fast and also leave flames on the ground, making them difficult to avoid. If Fire Man gains enough distance, he will go all-out with his attack and begin firing so rapidly that Mega Man can no longer dodge his flames. The only way to prevent this assault is to remain close to him, though he can also be beaten by burning down his health faster than he does, especially when using his weakness.

Fire Man is the only Robot Master that takes damage from the Ice Slasher, which acts as his main weakness at 4 damage per shot, and he also takes 2 damage from the Rolling Cutter and standard Mega Buster. Defeating him grants Mega Man the Fire Storm, which does not set fire to the ground when used by him, but does grant him a temporary shield.

Mega Man: Dr. Wily's Revenge

Boss sprite from Dr. Wily's Revenge.

Fire Man is part of the first batch of Robot Masters in Mega Man: Dr. Wily's Revenge, appearing in the bottom-right corner on the stage select screen. His new stage's theme remains similar, with the addition of Changkey Makers from Mega Man 2.

In battle, Fire Man's power has been greatly reduced, and he now does nothing but occasionally shoot a slow-moving and delayed fireball forward that does not leave any flames behind. His weaknesses remain the same, though he takes only 1 damage from the Mega Buster.

Mega Man: The Wily Wars

The Wily Wars sprite.

Like other Robot Masters from his game, Fire Man appears in the Mega Man 1 remake of Mega Man: The Wily Wars, with updated graphics and his own stage portrait.

While other bosses are essentially unchanged from the original game, Fire Man's behaviour has been altered so that he will no longer fire his weapon at an unmanageable rate, no matter his distance from Mega Man. As such gameplay changes in the Wily Wars remakes are rare and generally done in the interest of fixing bugs, this suggests that the quirk in his original behaviour may have been unintended, though this has not been confirmed.

Mega Man Soccer

Fire Man is one of the available players in Mega Man Soccer, with his own team and field, known as Fire Field. His special is to turn the ball into a fireball, which sets enemies ablaze for 2 seconds and disables them for 1 second.

Battle Network era

Fire Man has a NetNavi equivalent in FireMan.EXE (also known as TorchMan in dubs of the anime), whose torch makes up his entire head. He appears as the first boss in the original Mega Man Battle Network and thereby the first boss in the entire series, acting as the original Navi of recurring WWW member Mr. Match.

Other Appearances

Though Fire Man himself does not appear in Mega Man 8 and Mega Man & Bass, both games feature a Fire Met enemy that appears to be a Metall version of him. Among other places, the Metalls appear in a section based on Fire Man's original stage in the Robot Museum in Mega Man & Bass.

Official Data

Mega Man 3 info card

In Mega Man 3, all humanoid robots known to have been created by Dr. Light at the time are shown on info cards in the game's ending, including the Robot Masters from the first game. They are listed with their original tasks despite Mega Man's card acknowledging that he is no longer an assistant robot, suggesting that they may have been restored to their intended function after Dr. Wily's initial defeat.

Mega Man & Bass CD

Fire Man's CD in Mega Man & Bass is oddly located in Astro Man's stage, rather than Burner Man's or the Fire Man exhibit of the Robot Museum. It is buried in the ground next to a Wall Teck, so only Mega Man can obtain it by using Rush Search.
