Charge Man (or Chargeman) is a Robot Master appearing in Mega Man 5. He is one of the Robot Masters ostensibly working for Proto Man in a bid for world domination, though like the others, he is later revealed to have been created by Dr. Wily.

Charge Man's head resembles a steam engine in design, with his face on the smokebox door, and cowcatchers are also attached to his feet. His powers likewise revolve around being a humanoid train, able to blow steam and coals from his chimney and charge forward at high speed.

In the Games

Mega Man 5

Boss sprite from Mega Man 5.

In Mega Man 5, Charge Man is one of the main eight Robot Master bosses and appears as the fourth choice (in reading order) on the stage select screen. His stage is mostly set on a moving train, where Charge Man himself is also a fought.

In battle, Charge Man walks back and forth, turning towards Mega Man if he jumps over him and occasionally charging forward at a high speed, stopping only when he reaches the position Mega Man was at when he started his charge. His other attack causes him to stop and turn red, blowing his whistle and shooting three burning coals into the air; after a short time, they rain down, with one falling down above his head and the other two spread out to the left and right of it. During either of his attacks, he is invincible and shots bounce off him.

Charge Man's weakness is the Power Stone from Stone Man, which deals 4 damage per hit, though the spiralling trajectory of the stones makes it difficult to hit him with. Defeating him grants Mega Man the Charge Kick, which turns his slide into an attack while it is equipped.

Battle Network era

Charge Man has a Net Navi equivalent in ChargeMan.EXE, a mascot Navi for a railway who resembles a full steam train without a humanoid torso. He appears in Mega Man Battle Network 6 and his operator is Al Ferry.

Trivia

  • Charge Man's face being located on a steam engine smokebox evokes the image of Thomas the Tank Engine, an anthropomorphised locomotive character that is popular in Japan and around the world.
