Bar Waying is an enemy first appearing in Mega Man X2. It consists of two robotic "heads" that extend between the floor and ceiling of a corridor, and a cylindrical, beam-like gate between them.

In Mega Man X2, Bar Waying is one of the first enemies encountered in the game, appearing in the Abandoned Reploid Factory opening stage and briefly in Flame Stag's Volcanic Zone Stage. The gate starts out at the ceiling, but once X is close enough, it begins to extend downwards until its bottom part reaches the floor, effectively blocking off the passage. Though it can harm X from above if he attempts to move through before the gate is completed, the enemy will remain completely stationary after finishing its animation, behaving like a wall and making no attempt to attack. Shooting it a few times will destroy it, and X can also dash through before the gate has fully extended if he is quick enough, making it mostly harmless and inconsequential.

A more notable use of a Bar Waying appears in the Volcanic Zone Stage, blocking off a Life Up in the erupting volcano section. As X is being chased by the rising lava, he must destroy the Bar Waying quickly to retrieve the Life Up or risk taking damage, making it one of the few instances in which the enemy's presence can create a truly dangerous situation.

Rockman X DiVE

Bar Waying as it appears in Rockman X DiVE.

Bar Wayings appear more frequently in the mobile game Rockman X DiVE, starting with the Power Control Center stage of the Story mode and also being found in some Event stages. They serve a similar role as in Mega Man X2, simply blocking off the character's way until destroyed, which can allow them to temporarily lock the player in with a swarm of more dangerous enemies.

Trivia

  • Despite acting like a wall, X can phase through the completed gate with the charged Speed Burner in X2, though it will slow him down.
