The First Armor (ファストアーマー)[1], also known as the Normal Armor (ノーマルアーマー)[2] or Armor of Light (アーマーオブライト)[3], is a set of Armor Parts obtained from the Light Capsules in Mega Man X. It also appears in Mega Man Xtreme, Mega Man Maverick Hunter X, and various spin-off material.

In the Games

Mega Man X

The First Armor debuted in Mega Man X. It is most notable for introducing the Dash function and Charge Shots for Special Weapons, which would later become staples of the series. It is also unique because, in a regular playthrough, the player must obtain at least two of the Armor Parts: the Light Capsule for the Foot Parts is placed in such a way that it is unavoidable, while Zero ensures the player has Arm Parts by giving them his if they don't have them at the scene of his death.

Parts Location Effect
Head Parts Sky Stage Grants X the ability to destroy certain blocks by jumping into them from below, headbutting them. It also protects X from falling rocks in certain areas.
Body Parts Forest Stage Reduces all damage received by 50%.
Arm Parts Factory Stage / Sigma Stage 1 Grants X a fourth Charge Shot level. At this fourth level, the X-Buster gains the Spiral Crush Buster (スパイラルクラッシュバスター)[4], which fires a swirl of pink shots with a permeating effect. X can also charge Special Weapons, which each have their own unique Charge Shot.
Foot Parts Snow Mountain Stage Grants X the ability to Dash, and to destroy certain blocks by Wall Kicking off of them.

Mega Man Xtreme

The First Armor returns digitally in the Mother Computer in Mega Man Xtreme, acting mostly the same. Since X already has the Dash by default in this game, his Foot Parts function slightly differently.

Parts Location Effect
Head Parts Template:MMXILink Grants X the ability to destroy certain blocks by jumping into them from below, headbutting them.
Body Parts Template:MMXILink Reduces all damage received by 50%.
Arm Parts Template:MMXILink Grants X a fourth Charge Shot level. At this fourth level, the X-Buster gains the Spiral Crush Buster, which fires a swirling pink shot with increased damage. X can also charge Special Weapons.
Foot Parts Snowfield Stage Grants X the ability to destroy certain blocks by Wall Kicking off of them, and increases his horizontal Wall Kick distance.

Mega Man Maverick Hunter X

The First Armor returns in the remake Mega Man Maverick Hunter X, with a slight visual redesign and rearranged Light Capsule locations. Additionally, the Arm Parts differ based on whether the player got them from the Light Capsule or from Zero.

Parts Location Effect
Head Parts Abandoned Missile Base Grants X the ability to destroy certain blocks by jumping into them from below, headbutting them.
Body Parts New-type Airport Reduces all damage received by 50%.
Arm Parts Recon Base Ruins Grants X a fourth Charge Shot level. At this fourth level, the X-Buster gains the Spiral Crush Buster, which can hit a single target up to three times. X can also charge Special Weapons.
Sigma Palace 3 Grants X a fourth Charge Shot level. At this fourth level, the X-Buster gains the Zero Buster, which deals increased damage in one hit. X can also charge Special Weapons.
Foot Parts Prototype Weapons Plant Grants X the ability to Dash, and to destroy certain blocks by Wall Kicking off of them.

Mega Man X DiVE

In Mega Man X DiVE, First Armor X appears as a playable Hunter Program. His Active Skills are Spiral Crush Buster, which is an extra powerful Charge Shot as usual, and Headbutt, which weaponizes the Head Parts into a rising physical attack rather than a utility.

  • In the Rockman X manga, X equips parts of the First Armor as he fights the eight Mavericks, fully assembling the armor when Zero gives him his Arm Parts.

Behind the Scenes

Developer Commentary

"We were working on this at a time when RPGs were exploding onto the market. The whole idea of experience points and additional powers according to your character's level was becoming mainstream. Then there was Mega Man, which was still a more classic representation of the action game genre. I started to fell that Mega Man was not shining as brightly in this light. That's why we wanted to bring in more power-ups. As far as weapons were concerned, Mega Man always had the "get new weapons by defeating enemies" system going, so we wanted to add another form of powering up. This train of thought led us to armor parts that enhance your character." - (Keiji Inafune)[5]
"Yeah, I remember we were like, 'But what's the head piece armor parts going to do? Give him the ability to perform a headbutt move?' (laugh)" - (Hayato Kaji)[5]
